NBA Star Creates a New Art Installation for Hotel El Ganzo

Desmond Mason

Former NBA basketball star turned visual artist Desmond Mason is the artist in residence this month at the new, chic boutique Hotel El Ganzo, creating a new intervention within one of the hotel’s suites. This is Desmond’s third stint at El Ganzo, and his second visit since its re-opening last November, as a part of its thriving Artists in Residence program, an initiative that welcomes visual artists and musicians from all over the world to leave their mark on the hotel.

Hotel El Ganzo, located in the Puerto Los Cabos community of Los Cabos, Mexico, is an artist’s haven boasting contributions by Mexican and international painters, sculptors and musicians. The hotel serves as inspiration with its white walls, which double as canvases, original music created at The Underground, a secret recording studio tucked beneath the hotel lobby, and stunning views of the Puerto Los Cabos Marina from the hotel’s rooftop infinity pool. The setting more than inspires Desmond who, during his stay, worked on an addition to his latest series, “Geometric Metals,” in which he captures special moments and people from his life transformed into various geometric shapes. One of the most important elements of the series is the piece containing a portrait of his girlfriend, whom he used as a model and guide for the installation. His previous works at El Ganzo include the iconic crown motif on the hotel’s exterior as well as the inspirational quote, “There are moments when living is just simply living” at the water feature inside the hotel. Desmond also added his own personal touch on one of the palm trees outside the hotel.

Desmond Mason was born and raised in Waxahachie, Texas. His athletic talents awarded him a scholarship at the University of Oklahoma where he studied Art History and developed his skills in drawing and painting — all while he was being drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 2000 NBA draft. His NBA career spanned 10 seasons until his retirement in 2010. His career as an artist has endured, however, having sold over 250 pieces to various collectors around the world, with works exhibited at several museums.

Desmond’s artistic talents have taken him to Mexico, Japan, China, Vietnam, South Korea, Dallas, Seattle, New York, Las Vegas, Bahamas, Oklahoma, and one of the largest art events in the world, Art Basel in Miami. His list of clients includes George Clooney, Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, sportscaster Joe Buck, Mike Meldan, among others. The results of his third residency – the Geometric Metals installation is now complete in the Very Large Suite in the hotel.
