The Fogo Island Inn, located on Fogo Island, off the remote northeast coast of Newfoundland, is perched on the very edge of the North Atlantic [...]

The Fogo Island Inn, located on Fogo Island, off the remote northeast coast of Newfoundland, is perched on the very edge of the North Atlantic Ocean and surrounded by whales, seabirds and icebergs. The 29-room-and-suite property stands on crooked pilotis on the dramatic and rocky coastline, providing panoramic views through its wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows.

The opening is a milestone in the work of The Shorefast Foundation and its founder, visionary Zita Cobb. Following a wildly successful career in the high technology industry, Cobb returned to Fogo Island, her birthplace, to invest millions of her own money – supported by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Government of Canada – to reinvigorate the waning economy. Bruised after a government fishing moratorium from the 90s drastically affected the island’s reliance on cod fishing, one of the goals of the foundation is to create jobs; the Inn will be fully operated by a staff of 90 Fogo Island residents.

Todd Saunders, Norway’s rising star architect, designed the property. (Like Cobb, Saunders has ties to the land; he was born in nearby Gander, Newfoundland.) The strong, uncomplicated lines of the Inn’s exterior complement the natural landscape and reflect the aesthetic of Saunders’ other designs for the island: Shorefast’s Fogo Island Artist Studios. These architectural gems (four are finished with two more to be completed) provide a creative community for visiting artists and thought leaders from around the world to come and be inspired by the culture, history, and beauty of the island.

The island’s people and stories are felt throughout the Inn: all rooms, suites and public areas hold bespoke furniture and fixtures entirely handmade and painted by local carpenters and artisans; the textile accessories – quilts, rugs, pillows – are hand-crafted by the ladies of the Island, many of whom fishermen’s wives. Inn interiors are the result of a collaborative effort among local people and international designers (Ilse Crawford served as an advisor). Most rooms and suites have wood-burning stoves – as do all public areas. There are eight different accommodation categories, with names referencing a part of the island’s DNA (e.g., Mooring, Storehouse, and “Gappy”). The property has a fine-dining restaurant, lounge, bar, and conference center – all with bold-ocean views and wood-burning fireplaces. And, on the Inn’s rooftop, there are Northern-European style wood-fired saunas and hot tubs – all designed with star-gazing in mind.

The Inn reflects Shorefast’s commitment to the arts. It is home to the Fogo Island Contemporary Art Gallery, the Dr. Leslie A. Harris Heritage Library (specializing in literature of the Northeast Coast of Newfoundland), and the Fogo Island Cinema, a partnership with the National Film Board of Canada.

Depending upon the season, rates start from $600 per room, based on double occupancy.

Rates are full board for most rooms and include breakfast, dinner, afternoon tea, supper, snacks, and all beverages, including premium wines and spirits (Innkeeper’s reserve list is additional). Half board is available for a small number of rooms and includes breakfast, supper and non-alcoholic beverages. http://www.fogoislandinn.ca/

DESTINATION HISTORY and WHAT TO DO:

Home to 150 species of plants and herds of wild caribou, Fogo Island is the largest of the offshore islands of New Foundland and Labrador, Canada. Its archipelago is so remote that it has its own time zone and is known as one of the mythical four corners of the earth. With a population of fewer than 3,000 residents, the island gets its name from the Portuguese word for fire, who, along with the French, English, and Irish, were among the first to discover it as early as the 16th century. Not until the 1750s, however, was Fogo Island permanently settled and established as a British mercantile system of fisheries.

Guests of the Inn can explore the history and landscape through a number of bespoke experiences indigenous to Fogo Island – cultural, the natural world, and the arts. On Fogo Island people can find what they are looking for even if it’s been with them all along; life moves to the rhythm of the natural world. Through these Fogo Island experiences and creative adventures, guests have an opportunity to connect … perhaps to be welcomed into a home for supper, enlightened while hiking rugged coastal trails, amazed while fishing for cod in the traditional way, or inspired through an art workshop … guests might leave with a fresh perspective on the world.

Inn reservations and Fogo Island Experiences at http://www.fogoislandinn.ca/, reservations@fogoislandinn.ca or Telephone: 1-709-658-3444

GETTING THERE:

From either St. John’s, NL, or Hallifax, NS, guests can connect to Gander, NL. From Gander guests drive one hour to Farewell to board the Change Island / Fogo Island ferry that makes trips every four hours. (The ride is about 45 minutes.) The Inn can arrange all travel within Newfoundland.

What do the editors of Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler think of Mashpi Lodge? “It” is “Hot”. The stylish eco-lodge located within the Mashpi Reserve just two-and-a-half hours from Quito, Ecuador, has been named to T+L’s “It List” and CNT’s “Hot List” of the best new hotels of 2013. Taken together, that’s quite a recommendation.

“The rooms are light-filled and include floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook a wild habitat that beckons you to head out and explore.” Mashpi Lodge “is turning Ecuador’s mainland into a serious ecotourism player,” according to Travel + Leisure. The raves of CNT were no less considerable. “High design in the high jungle – no thatched roofs here,” noted the magazine’s editors in their “Hot List” critique of the 22-room Lodge, which opened in April 2012. They went on to pinpoint “any of three Yaku suites, outfitted with Philippe Starck tubs facing a sea of ferns and bromeliads” as the best accommodations, and noted “earth-tone interiors and walls of glass blend with the landscape, a mix of rain and cloud forest.”

CNT further laid out a typical day at Mashpi Lodge: “Rise at dawn and take breakfast on the terrace with quetzals and toucans, then hop on an aerial bicycle and pedal through the forest canopy in search of orange-fronted barbets and crimson-rumped toucanets. Or board the 1.25-mile gondola system and float through the clouds to the far reaches of the reserve. At day’s end, unwind with a fruit daiquiri in the glass-walled bar as fireflies put on a show. Foraged fruits and biodynamic veggies distinguish the menu.”

The 3,200-acre Mashpi Reserve stretches across lowland floodplain forests and lower montane – or “foothill” – forest between 1,800 and 4,500 feet above sea level. It is a haven for biodiversity with more than 300 bird species out of an estimated 500 identified so far. The Reserve and its eponymous Lodge are deeply committed to protecting the local environment and human population in a thoughtful and effective manner.

Rates at Mashpi Lodge start at $1,296 per person/double for 3-days/2 nights, including all meals, guided explorations (in English or Spanish), specialized lectures, rain ponchos, rubber boots, transfers from/to major hotels in Quito, and aerial canopy tram rides (upon completion).

For reservations or more information on Mashpi Lodge, please visit www.mashpilodge.com or email Adriana Velasco at avelasco@mashpilodge.com.

Aloft Hotels announces a groundbreaking partnership with modern design retailer Design Within Reach, Inc that introduces authentic modern design into public spaces such as the re: mix lounge, the w xyz bar and the backyard.

By incorporating pieces like chairs designed by Charles and Ray Eames to George Nelson Pendant Lamps, Aloft and DWR are reimagining the design-led hotel experience. Aloft’s DWR collection includes a mix of 23 custom and in-stock pieces, including Verner Panton Chairs for the backyard outdoor spaces and Nelson™ Platform Benches, Satellite Chandeliers, Eames® Molded Plastic Side Chairs and Verpan Stools to occupy the re: mix lounge and w xyz bar spaces. Currently, installations of the closely curated design package are rolling out to properties as diverse as Aloft Harlem and Aloft Nashville West End to Aloft Calgary University.

“At Aloft, we’re different by design and our guests expect and appreciate an authentic design experience,” says Brian McGuinness, Senior Vice President for Starwood’s Specialty Select Brands. “DWR’s design philosophy perfectly complements Aloft’s sensibility, and we’ve been working closely to find the right opportunities in our public spaces to showcase iconic items from DWR’s collection.”

Over the past 12 months, Aloft and DWR have been planning and modifying layouts and costs that best fit the vibe of the hotels while maintaining the authentic design aesthetic for which both brands are known. DWR installations will roll out to nearly 20 hotels in the next few months, including a mix of hotels that are replenishing furniture, as well as at brand new hotels that are coming online and conversion hotels.

“Design Within Reach makes authentic modern design accessible, and we applaud Aloft’s commitment to authenticity,” says DWR President and CEO John Edelman. “Aloft has chosen to be an industry leader through its design-led approach and enthusiasm for authentic modern product. Our companies share a passion for design, and we are proud to be working with the Aloft team.”

Located in the heart of Boston’s Theater District, Revere Hotel has put together a list of amenities with its guests in mind, ranging from a helpful gadget that will boost energy levels throughout the day to a tasty turndown treat in the evening.

• Personal Oxygen Devices – also known as PODs, these portable oxygen devices are available in all suites for an à la cart charge of $40. The POD delivers a rich source of clean, fresh oxygen and provides a natural source of balance and rejuvenation – perfect for reviving oneself after running around the city all day. Sleek at 7″ tall and 1.75″ in diameter, the oxygen bottle can be used with one hand and can easily fit into a purse, backpack and jacket pocket. It weighs only 2.5 ounces when full and lasts a full 40 breaths of pure clean oxygen.

• Gourmet Popcorn Turndown Service – Revere Hotel has forgone the traditional turndown amenity of mints or chocolate in lieu of gourmet popcorn created by Executive Chef Bader Ali. Flavors have ranged from Curry to Snickerdoodle to Red Wine Burgundy and have allowed the brand the opportunity to offer a healthier and more unique amenity that is also a homage to its location in the heart of Boston’s theatre district.

• Bully Boy Vodka – Bottled exclusively in 750 ml bottles for Revere as an in-room spirit. Bully Boy Distillers is a Boston’s first craft distillery specializing in small batch spirits located about a mile from Revere Hotel is Boston’s historic south end. Each bottle is labeled and numbered by hand making it the perfect take-home souvenir.

• Skoah Bath Amenities – Revere offers nine different Skoah bath amenities in every guest room, including invigor-mint shampu/conditioner, smooth talk body wash and a pH balancing gel cleanser. All of Skoah’s products are loaded with high performance plant extracts and peptides, vitamins, minerals, organic compounds, and actives to ensure they generate the results they are supposed to. Guests who fall in love with a particular scent can purchase the product in the lobby to take home.

• “Fitness Fluff & Fold” Program – Ideal for guests who stay at the hotel often and may not wish to constantly carry their workout gear back and forth, this complimentary program allows guests to leave their gym clothes/sneakers with the hotel, which will be washed, dried and folded upon their next return.

• Pillow Menu – To help ensure that guests obtain the most peaceful slumber possible, the hotel offers a carefully curated pillow menu. With just one quick phone call, guests will be able to select the one that is right for them, whether it be a side sleeper, back sleeper, anti-snore or hypoallergenic pillow.

• Kindles – Paying tribute to Boston’s incredibly important, deep-seated past, Revere offers its guests the option to rent out Kindles pre-loaded with books that help tell the story of the city’s rich history. Kindles can be obtained for a $100 deposit and used throughout the stay.

Hotel Vermont opened today at 41 Cherry Street in the heart of Burlington. The soon-to-be LEED-certified hotel is locally developed, owned, designed and operated. Smith Buckley Architects and TruexCullins Interiors ensured the hotel offers an authentic Vermont experience, from a wood-burning hearth and the aroma of steamed cider in the lobby, to custom Johnson Woolen Mills blankets in the guest rooms.

“Building in Vermont means crafting quality materials with integrity,” said TruexCullins principal, Kim Deetjen. “Hotel Vermont evokes a true Vermont experience showcasing resources such as locally crafted furniture pieces in the lobby and in Juniper, stone countertops with Vermont marble, granite, and flooring made from local shells and reclaimed antique oak.”

Stepping outside at the hotel’s bar and restaurant, Juniper, a granite terrace with open hearth and soft seating overlooks the ever-changing scenery of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains. Hotel Vermont offers 2,000 square feet of green roof space, not including the 7,500 square foot Harbor Terrace green roof showcasing locally-based, noted sculptor Richard Erdman’s bronze, “Form Reclining.” Hotel Vermont features four meeting rooms, two of which showcase Lake Champlain views, which totals 1,100 square feet of space for meetings and receptions for up to 80 guests. Hotel Vermont is also the first hotel to offer a robust 100Mbs synchronous broadband internet access — the fastest internet speed available, through a partnership with Burlington Telecom.

“This project is a first for Burlington, and has garnered a lot of local interest, support, and regional attention,” said Hans van Wees, General Manager of Hotel Vermont. “We are bringing an independent, luxury hotel to this city so travelers can more comfortably enjoy our community and locals can feel at home to gather here, especially at Juniper and at the newest outpost of Hen of the Wood. We have made a considerable promise by naming the property Hotel Vermont, and we plan to deliver.”

Chef de Cuisine Douglas Paine will oversee Juniper, which will serve morning pastries, small producer coffee, and afternoon tea service. In the evening, Juniper will offer limited-production beer, organic and biodynamic wines and small plates.

Hotel Vermont’s mixology program will also attract attention from hotel guests and the local community. Renowned local mixologist, Eben Hill, has been appointed to head up the beverage program at Juniper. Hill has developed a new cocktail program inspired by local Vermont ingredients, and also offers cocktail classes to tutor hotel guests and locals in the art of mixology. In addition, the hotel has eleven local distillery partners including Whistle Pig Rye and Vermont Spirits.

Opening this summer, Hen of the Wood Restaurant will debut at Hotel Vermont as the second outpost of one of the state’s favorite dining spots. Hen of the Wood features the acclaimed farm-to-table cuisine and intuitive service standards of 2011 and 2012 James Beard Foundation’s “Best Chef Northeast” finalist, Chef Eric Warnstedt. The restaurant is known for its commitment to small production and family farmers and foragers, a natural approach to wine, and a rotating menu.

To ensure guests sleep well, Hotel Vermont features windows that open to the fresh Vermont air and a new Bedtime Menu, which includes local Lunaroma Aromatherapy offerings to calm the senses; a Vermont Flannel Pajama selection for snuggling on a crisp Fall nights; a custom Vermont Teddy Bear to hug and take home; a selection of bedtime stories for the little ones; and a soothing hot toddy list.

The uniqueness of Hotel Vermont in its offerings and services will elevate hospitality options in Burlington. The hotel is named for the original Hotel Vermont, which first welcomed guests on the corner of Main Street and St. Paul Streets in Burlington 100 years ago. The groundbreaking of the new incarnation of Hotel Vermont was launched by Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin and Commerce Secretary Lawrence Miller in September 2011.

Opening rates for Hotel Vermont start at $229 per night. For more information, visit www.hotelvt.com

W New York – Union Square today unveiled the completion of a multi-layered renovation project that merges traditional and contemporary styles to offer a fashionable escape in the heart of Manhattan’s liveliest neighborhoods. The transformation is part of the W brand’s ongoing, $100 million commitment to the renovation of more than 11 of its properties across North America, and includes a full re-design of the hotel’s 270 guestrooms and top suites, W Living Room, Todd English’s iconic Olives New York, and destination bar Lilium by Gerber Group (previously Underbar). Inspired by the neighborhood’s junction of uptown and downtown New York City, the renovation also preserves original design details of the landmark 1911 Beaux Arts building, including its turn-of-the century Great Room with 23-foot high gilded ceilings and grand windows which was restored late last year.

Mix & Mingle…The W Living Room

The new design of the W Union Square Living Room, by New York based design firm Krause + Sawyer, creates an atmosphere that is ideal for conducting business by day and enjoying Union Square’s thriving social scene by night. The W Living Room’s expanded seating area uses contrasting patterns and textures including: custom window seating in metallic leather, green tiger leather-backed houndstooth chairs, a u-shaped chesterfield sofa in embossed black paisley leather, and a tufted sofa in electric blue crocodile. A dramatic, beaded chain ceiling installation brings a feeling of downtown grit, while a black steel communal table, equipped with inlay plugs for chargers, encourages guests to mix and mingle while staying connected. Traditional lanterns and urns have been artfully tagged by local Bronx graffiti collective, TatsCru, a select few of which are available for purchase for a limited time through the hotel’s Whatever/Whenever® service.

Uptown Meets Downtown Upstairs…The Guest Rooms + Suites

In collaboration with renowned design firms d-ash design and Wilson Associates, each of the hotel’s 270 remodeled guest rooms and suites are anchored by a sculptural headboard representing an abstract view of Union Square and embody a purposeful collision of unlikely materials and playfulness of scale throughout. A nod to the fashions of the neighborhood, silver window coverings are brightly stitched together with silk fabric mimicking a man’s tie, while wall coverings in a soft, sophisticated “Park Avenue” white are contrasted with a bohemian metallic blue. Designed to be transformed from a stylish hotel suite into a fashionable event venue, the Extreme WOW® Suite (the W brand’s take on the Presidential Suite) is equipped with state-of-the-art audio and video capabilities including wall units that can easily interchange from dining room table to space for a DJ booth.

Indulge… Lilium and Olives New York

The hotel’s milestone renovation also includes the re-design of its destination bar Lilium, as well as a complete renovation of Todd English’s iconic Olives New York restaurant. Lilium, the hotel’s subterranean nightspot, sits seductively beneath the hotel’s façade. Re-designed by Gulla Jonsdottir of G+Design and inspired by the intricate look of a cave of wild lilies, key features of the 1,600 sq. ft. interior include a twisted metal ceiling that cascades down the walls and complements the sculptural black steel lilies, created by acclaimed metal artist Scot Brown. Contoured wood and gold-tone accents enrich the raw elements to evoke a dark, feminine energy and brooding intimacy. The new design of Olives New York, by Jeffrey Beers International, uses sophisticated combinations of textures and materials–including dark woods and blackened steel that embraces a warm, rich aesthetic. The expanded bar, now located in the center of the space, creates a vibrant hub in the heart of the restaurant while new seating choices from u-shaped banquettes, an elevated chef’s table, to a nine-seat raw bar along the signature open kitchen, offer guests a multilayered dining experience.

On April 1, the Aranwa Pueblito Encantado del Colca (Enchanted Village of Colca), a brand new resort and spa opened in Peru’s Colca Valley on the on the banks of the Colca River, a destination rich in Andean legends, colonial traditions and most notably the ‘Cruz del Condor’ or Valley of the Condors. Built at an investment of more than US$3.5 million, the property is designed to complement the natural beauty of its surroundings, with a clean, modern aesthetic. Each of the 41 guest accommodations offer views of the surrounding majestic Andes Mountains and feature solar-powered heat and hot water.

Truly enchanting, the resort’s stunning grounds are abundant with lush gardens and are a habitat for hummingbirds, which can be seen throughout the property. It features two natural cascading waterfalls, one of which is accessible for guests to enjoy an al fresco shower, as well as a lake stocked with trout that provides water views for the restaurant and patio.

In addition to verdant greenery, trees and blossoming flora, there is a small organic farm that provides the kitchen with fresh quinoa, beans, corn and more. As a nod to its colonial plantation past, a water-powered grain mill that greets guests at the resort’s entrance has been completely restored and is still used to grind grain and make flour for the kitchen. And at night, the property is transformed into a natural planetarium with a blanket of stars overhead, and a light show of shooting stars across the sky.

“We are thrilled to introduce a new level of quality and service to the Colca canyon, one of the most tranquil destinations in Peru,” said Gabriel Alavarez, Deputy General Manager of Aranwa Hotels Resorts & Spas.

“The resort’s location offers spectacular mountain and river views and, with a low profile design, guests will feel as though they are staying a Peruvian village.”

Thought to be the world’s deepest canyon at twice the depth of the Grand Canyon, portions of the Colca Canyon are uniquely habitable, with pre-Colombian terraced fields still supporting agriculture and human life today. In addition to the awesome physical splendor, visitors come to see the unforgettable sight of the gracefully soaring Andean condors at Cruz del Condor.

For guests looking to explore the region, Pueblito Encantado del Colca is ideally situated from a few rather indigionous experiences. Located just ten minutes from the town of Chivay with its vibrant market, it is a gateway to ancient Andean traditions, mysticism, and religious festivals that few have seen up close. Also nearby is the famous La Calera hot springs. Those feeling more adventurous can explore Arequipa; located three hours away at an altitude of 7,661 feet Arequipa is referred to as the “White City”, as it is almost completely built of white volcanic stone and is Peru’s second largest city.
