Following the refurbishment, the new terrace, La Terrazza Continentale is stylish and modern with beautiful soft colors and wood flooring, heated benches and a stunning open fire, allowing the terrace to stay open all year.

To coincide with the reopening of the terrace, they have also launch a new cocktail menu featuring signature Italian cocktails such as the Negroni, which was born in Florence, originating from the popular ‘Americano’ cocktail. However, in 1920 an Italian playboy, Count Camillo Negroni, wanted the barman at Cafe Casoni to add gin to the concoction and the drink took on the name Negroni.

Hotel Continentale is a boutique hotel owned by the Ferragamo family and located in the historical centre, a few steps from the Uffizi Gallery, Piazza della Signoria, the Cathedral and Palazzo Pitti. La Terrazza Continentale is the place to be, with breath-taking views overlooking the stunning city of Florence, including the iconic River Arno and the Ponte Vecchio.

The Fogo Island Inn, located on Fogo Island, off the remote northeast coast of Newfoundland, is perched on the very edge of the North Atlantic [...]

The Fogo Island Inn, located on Fogo Island, off the remote northeast coast of Newfoundland, is perched on the very edge of the North Atlantic Ocean and surrounded by whales, seabirds and icebergs. The 29-room-and-suite property stands on crooked pilotis on the dramatic and rocky coastline, providing panoramic views through its wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows.

The opening is a milestone in the work of The Shorefast Foundation and its founder, visionary Zita Cobb. Following a wildly successful career in the high technology industry, Cobb returned to Fogo Island, her birthplace, to invest millions of her own money – supported by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Government of Canada – to reinvigorate the waning economy. Bruised after a government fishing moratorium from the 90s drastically affected the island’s reliance on cod fishing, one of the goals of the foundation is to create jobs; the Inn will be fully operated by a staff of 90 Fogo Island residents.

Todd Saunders, Norway’s rising star architect, designed the property. (Like Cobb, Saunders has ties to the land; he was born in nearby Gander, Newfoundland.) The strong, uncomplicated lines of the Inn’s exterior complement the natural landscape and reflect the aesthetic of Saunders’ other designs for the island: Shorefast’s Fogo Island Artist Studios. These architectural gems (four are finished with two more to be completed) provide a creative community for visiting artists and thought leaders from around the world to come and be inspired by the culture, history, and beauty of the island.

The island’s people and stories are felt throughout the Inn: all rooms, suites and public areas hold bespoke furniture and fixtures entirely handmade and painted by local carpenters and artisans; the textile accessories – quilts, rugs, pillows – are hand-crafted by the ladies of the Island, many of whom fishermen’s wives. Inn interiors are the result of a collaborative effort among local people and international designers (Ilse Crawford served as an advisor). Most rooms and suites have wood-burning stoves – as do all public areas. There are eight different accommodation categories, with names referencing a part of the island’s DNA (e.g., Mooring, Storehouse, and “Gappy”). The property has a fine-dining restaurant, lounge, bar, and conference center – all with bold-ocean views and wood-burning fireplaces. And, on the Inn’s rooftop, there are Northern-European style wood-fired saunas and hot tubs – all designed with star-gazing in mind.

The Inn reflects Shorefast’s commitment to the arts. It is home to the Fogo Island Contemporary Art Gallery, the Dr. Leslie A. Harris Heritage Library (specializing in literature of the Northeast Coast of Newfoundland), and the Fogo Island Cinema, a partnership with the National Film Board of Canada.

Depending upon the season, rates start from $600 per room, based on double occupancy.

Rates are full board for most rooms and include breakfast, dinner, afternoon tea, supper, snacks, and all beverages, including premium wines and spirits (Innkeeper’s reserve list is additional). Half board is available for a small number of rooms and includes breakfast, supper and non-alcoholic beverages. http://www.fogoislandinn.ca/

DESTINATION HISTORY and WHAT TO DO:

Home to 150 species of plants and herds of wild caribou, Fogo Island is the largest of the offshore islands of New Foundland and Labrador, Canada. Its archipelago is so remote that it has its own time zone and is known as one of the mythical four corners of the earth. With a population of fewer than 3,000 residents, the island gets its name from the Portuguese word for fire, who, along with the French, English, and Irish, were among the first to discover it as early as the 16th century. Not until the 1750s, however, was Fogo Island permanently settled and established as a British mercantile system of fisheries.

Guests of the Inn can explore the history and landscape through a number of bespoke experiences indigenous to Fogo Island – cultural, the natural world, and the arts. On Fogo Island people can find what they are looking for even if it’s been with them all along; life moves to the rhythm of the natural world. Through these Fogo Island experiences and creative adventures, guests have an opportunity to connect … perhaps to be welcomed into a home for supper, enlightened while hiking rugged coastal trails, amazed while fishing for cod in the traditional way, or inspired through an art workshop … guests might leave with a fresh perspective on the world.

Inn reservations and Fogo Island Experiences at http://www.fogoislandinn.ca/, reservations@fogoislandinn.ca or Telephone: 1-709-658-3444

GETTING THERE:

From either St. John’s, NL, or Hallifax, NS, guests can connect to Gander, NL. From Gander guests drive one hour to Farewell to board the Change Island / Fogo Island ferry that makes trips every four hours. (The ride is about 45 minutes.) The Inn can arrange all travel within Newfoundland.

Justin Wilkes is one of the UK’s most respected dance music radio DJ’s. Justin spent 5 years at Capital where he transformed the sound of weekends with his inspired dance music sets. In September 2006 Justin joined the world famous Kiss 100 where he now presents weekday mornings featuring his legendary ‘Kisstory’ hour.

Justin’s top 5 Ibiza “Must Do’s”

1. Catch rays at Benirras Beach

My favorite beach on Ibiza, and probably the most bohemian on the island. Benirras is a gorgeous sheltered sandy cove on the North West coast not far from San Miguel. Loungers are still less than 10 Euros for the day, and if you stop by for sunset on a Thursday you’ll be serenaded by bongo playing locals.

2. Drink at KM5

Moroccan themed outdoor bar and restaurant situated 5km out of Ibiza Town on the San Jose road. This is where you’ll find the islands top dj’s hanging out before their sets. Great music, great cocktails and a seriously stylish crowd.

3. Eat at Sands Playa D’en Bossa

A fantastic place to pitch yourself in you’re staying on Playa D’en Bossa. If you’re lucky you might even catch Carl Cox making an impromptu appearance on the decks, and the food is a fusion of Ibizan and Japanese. As well as guest dj’s, they even have famous guest chefs making an appearance throughout the summer.

4. Visit Santa Gertrudis

This isn’t a normal stop on the tourist trail but it’s a gorgeous little town that if I lived on Ibiza would be my location of choice. There’s a vibrant square, some cool boutiques, a great tapas bar and new little restaurants opening every year.

5. Party all night at Eden

Eden is my summer residency and the only old school night on the island. Come to Kisstory on a Friday night at Eden San Antonio and you’ll be guaranteed more hands in the air moments than anywhere else on the island. I’ll be joined by DJ EZ, Rui Di Silva, Wideboys, Ratpack and more.

What do the editors of Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler think of Mashpi Lodge? “It” is “Hot”. The stylish eco-lodge located within the Mashpi Reserve just two-and-a-half hours from Quito, Ecuador, has been named to T+L’s “It List” and CNT’s “Hot List” of the best new hotels of 2013. Taken together, that’s quite a recommendation.

“The rooms are light-filled and include floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook a wild habitat that beckons you to head out and explore.” Mashpi Lodge “is turning Ecuador’s mainland into a serious ecotourism player,” according to Travel + Leisure. The raves of CNT were no less considerable. “High design in the high jungle – no thatched roofs here,” noted the magazine’s editors in their “Hot List” critique of the 22-room Lodge, which opened in April 2012. They went on to pinpoint “any of three Yaku suites, outfitted with Philippe Starck tubs facing a sea of ferns and bromeliads” as the best accommodations, and noted “earth-tone interiors and walls of glass blend with the landscape, a mix of rain and cloud forest.”

CNT further laid out a typical day at Mashpi Lodge: “Rise at dawn and take breakfast on the terrace with quetzals and toucans, then hop on an aerial bicycle and pedal through the forest canopy in search of orange-fronted barbets and crimson-rumped toucanets. Or board the 1.25-mile gondola system and float through the clouds to the far reaches of the reserve. At day’s end, unwind with a fruit daiquiri in the glass-walled bar as fireflies put on a show. Foraged fruits and biodynamic veggies distinguish the menu.”

The 3,200-acre Mashpi Reserve stretches across lowland floodplain forests and lower montane – or “foothill” – forest between 1,800 and 4,500 feet above sea level. It is a haven for biodiversity with more than 300 bird species out of an estimated 500 identified so far. The Reserve and its eponymous Lodge are deeply committed to protecting the local environment and human population in a thoughtful and effective manner.

Rates at Mashpi Lodge start at $1,296 per person/double for 3-days/2 nights, including all meals, guided explorations (in English or Spanish), specialized lectures, rain ponchos, rubber boots, transfers from/to major hotels in Quito, and aerial canopy tram rides (upon completion).

For reservations or more information on Mashpi Lodge, please visit www.mashpilodge.com or email Adriana Velasco at avelasco@mashpilodge.com.

Zegrahm Expeditions, the world leader in small-ship cruising and overland adventures, is pleased to announce the company’s 2014 land-based expedition schedule. Zegrahm’s overland adventures accommodate just 12 to 24 travelers per expedition. The itineraries feature the most authentic accommodations—including luxury tented camps, jungle lodges, and river boats—and transportation combinations—whether it be elephant-back and 4×4 vehicle to dogsled and snowmobile—to ensure travelers experience the very best of the destination.

In 2014, the company is offering 18 unique itineraries in Asia, Africa, the Arctic, and South America, including two brand-new expeditions: Myanmar Revealed: Life Along the Irrawaddy River (January 2 –16, 2014) which brings travelers to the less-visited villages along the Irrawaddy, Kaladan, and Lay Myo Rivers, and the wildlife- focused Natural Wonders of Sri Lanka (February 27 – March 16, 2014). Other highlights include:

Lapland: Home of the Sami People (March 15 –29, 2014) – The landscape of this little-known region of Northern Norway provides adventurers the chance to explore by boat, snowmobile, reindeer sleigh, snowshoes, cross-country skis, and even mush a dog sled, plus opportunities to meet the indigenous Sami, semi-nomadic reindeer herders whose travels coincide with Zegrahm’s visit.

Uganda: A Primate Paradise (July 18 – 31, 2014) – Travelers on this signature expedition will trek to see mountain gorillas in natural habitat, plus cruise to the base of Murchison Falls and hike through Kibale National Park in search of resident wildlife with Zegrahm field director, Jonathan Rossouw, author of Where to Watch Birds in Uganda.

Bolivia: Andes to the Amazon (October 10 –25, 2014) – Whether cruising Lake Titicaca—South America’s largest lake—by luxurious catamaran or exploring the wilderness of Madidi National Park, home to 800 species of birds (almost 10 percent of the world’s total), travelers will be treated to superlative experiences throughout this Bolivian adventure.

“From the snowy, serene landscape of Japan to the sun-drenched red dunes of Namibia and from wildlife-rich northern India to the cultural treasures of Iran, we are offering a great mix of adventures for both nature lovers and cultural enthusiasts in the coming year,” says Zegrahm President, Edwin Blythe. “Each of these expeditions is led by either a Zegrahm field director or long-time expedition leader who will add an educational component to the experience.”

In the fading light, elegantly attired passengers descend the gangplank of the Emeraude, an immaculate all-white, near-replica of a 1930s paddlewheel steamer.

Tenders ferry the vessel’s entire passenger roster to the mouth of Hang Trong, or Drum Cave. Beneath the craggy ceiling of the ancient vault, flickering candles throw shadows into the walls’ rocky crevices and the tables are set with soft white linen, fresh flowers and sparkling glasses.

The most glamorous social event in the north of Vietnam gets underway this May 25 in — where else — a cavernous grotto sealed off from the outside world by the jade waters and mythical karsts of Halong Bay.

A study in contrasts, the Emeraude’s Wine & Dine Cruise Classic may be the most exquisite fine-dining-slash-caving experience on the planet. Last year the cruise sailed at capacity. Now in its 9th year, the Emeraude’s nostalgia for old-world charm and age-of-explorers romanticism comes through in every aspect of the cruise.

The itinerary begins with a continental or Vietnamese breakfast at the Press Club Hanoi, where guests will get acquainted before making the three-hour journey to Halong City. After checking in at the Emeraude Café and getting settled in their cabins, passengers will dine on a seafood buffet aboard the vessel. Before the main event of the night, there’s the option to soak up some rays on the pristine beach of Soi Sim Island and sample sunset cocktails and tapas on the sundeck.

This year’s Black Tie Gala Dinner features acclaimed vintages from the Jim Barry winery in Clare Valley, Australia. Classically trained Swiss Chef Marcel Isaak creates the accompanying gourmet four-course menu. After the meal and back aboard the boat, the party continues late into the night with beats provided by rising Vietnamese DJ, Polo.

The following morning, guests are presented with premium wines as a souvenir from the event, before returning to Hanoi on the Emeraude’s shuttle.

“It’s a cinematic experience,” said Kurt Walter, general manager of Emeraude Classic Cruises. “To see people in black tie promenading the decks, with the karsts looming all around, and the Emeraude, the moonlight and the dark waters as a backdrop — well, ‘mesmerizing’ is the only word that really comes close to describing it.”

The Revere Hotel Boston Common is unveiling its newest renovation at the property, Rooftop at Revere. Officially opening on May 18th, this fresh new space will be an urban oasis and chic lounge area situated seven stories above street level, just steps away from the hotel’s indoor swimming pool. Featuring wicked views of Boston, refreshing cocktails and seasonal snacks, this 16,000 square foot outdoor space is poised to become a haven for sunning, sipping and swimming during the hottest months in the hub.

A sophisticated yet playful design, Rooftop at Revere will be an eclectic setting for relaxation and entertainment set against a backdrop of spectacular city views. Lush New England greenery will emphasize the oasis environment with whimsical and curious art and statues throughout, further illustrating the hotel’s affinity for the arts. Four stylish and contemporary private cabanas will line the left-hand side of the deck, outfitted with plush seating, personal tables and cooling ventilation from the summer sun. Coveted chaise lounge chairs will sit alongside an array of patio and lounge furniture ideal for solo relaxation in the day and group gatherings well into the night. A half oval-shaped, glistening white bar will also offer additional seating for guests to enjoy cocktails and light bites.

Throughout the season, guests can wine and dine al fresco with service being offered both at the bar and the lounge area. Inspired, seasonal cocktails will be served up by the glass or pitcher under the guidance of Emerald Lounge Bar Manager, Teodora Bakardizheva. Unique concoctions such as Hibiscus Rum Punch and a Pineapple Basil elixir will offer an island escape in a glass. Guests can also pick their poison and create the perfect summer sangria by customizing a pitcher to their personal taste. Served up as a red, white or sparkling wine recipe, patrons can tailor their fruit to range from summer staples (apples, cherries, watermelon) to more exotic selections (goji berries, kiwi, mango.) A variety of frozen cocktail favorites to the likes of daiquiris, margaritas and piña coladas will also be available alongside Revere’s signature wheatgrass-infused prosecco popsicles, perfect for helping quench a summer’s thirst.

Simple snacks and specialty sandwiches will be served up daily for those looking for some substance with their sun. These offerings include: Tropical Salad (mixed greens, avocado, tomato, mango, lime-cilantro), Spiced hummus with grilled pita bread, Ahi Tuna Burger (pancetta, saffron aioli, balsamic onions) Caprese Sandwich (pesto mayonnaise, baguette) and a classic New England Lobster Roll (brie, basil grilled cheese, sourdough.)

Adjacent to the rooftop lounge, a smaller outdoor space will also be revamped into a new private event area, adding to Revere’s pre-existing 35,000 square feet of meeting and event space on-property. This unique space can be utilized for both corporate and social events of up to 125 people in an intimate outdoor setting.

An even more stylish staff, dressed head to toe in the chic surf-and-swimwear line, Pret-à-Surf, will complement the stylish décor of the space. Classic and sophisticated styles coupled with retro vintage prints, the Rooftop at Revere’s bartenders and cocktail servers will be outfitted in fashionable uniforms selected from the Spring/Summer 2013 collection. This is the first time Pret-a-Surf has partnered with a hotel in dressing its staff, and the Revere will also offer a selection of Pret-à-Surf pieces available for retail purchase to guests. Pret à Karen Mulligan, agent to the photographer, Annie Leibovitz and Jill Demling, Entertainment Editor at Vogue and also a native of Weston, Massachusetts, are the designers and owners of Pret-a-Surf. Pret-à- Surf has also created an exclusive Pret-à-Surf for Revere unisex t-shirt that will be available for purchase on-property.

Rooftop at Revere will be open through the end of September, from 4pm-10pm in May, June and September, and 11am-10pm in July and August.

Aloft Hotels announces a groundbreaking partnership with modern design retailer Design Within Reach, Inc that introduces authentic modern design into public spaces such as the re: mix lounge, the w xyz bar and the backyard.

By incorporating pieces like chairs designed by Charles and Ray Eames to George Nelson Pendant Lamps, Aloft and DWR are reimagining the design-led hotel experience. Aloft’s DWR collection includes a mix of 23 custom and in-stock pieces, including Verner Panton Chairs for the backyard outdoor spaces and Nelson™ Platform Benches, Satellite Chandeliers, Eames® Molded Plastic Side Chairs and Verpan Stools to occupy the re: mix lounge and w xyz bar spaces. Currently, installations of the closely curated design package are rolling out to properties as diverse as Aloft Harlem and Aloft Nashville West End to Aloft Calgary University.

“At Aloft, we’re different by design and our guests expect and appreciate an authentic design experience,” says Brian McGuinness, Senior Vice President for Starwood’s Specialty Select Brands. “DWR’s design philosophy perfectly complements Aloft’s sensibility, and we’ve been working closely to find the right opportunities in our public spaces to showcase iconic items from DWR’s collection.”

Over the past 12 months, Aloft and DWR have been planning and modifying layouts and costs that best fit the vibe of the hotels while maintaining the authentic design aesthetic for which both brands are known. DWR installations will roll out to nearly 20 hotels in the next few months, including a mix of hotels that are replenishing furniture, as well as at brand new hotels that are coming online and conversion hotels.

“Design Within Reach makes authentic modern design accessible, and we applaud Aloft’s commitment to authenticity,” says DWR President and CEO John Edelman. “Aloft has chosen to be an industry leader through its design-led approach and enthusiasm for authentic modern product. Our companies share a passion for design, and we are proud to be working with the Aloft team.”

Located in the heart of Boston’s Theater District, Revere Hotel has put together a list of amenities with its guests in mind, ranging from a helpful gadget that will boost energy levels throughout the day to a tasty turndown treat in the evening.

• Personal Oxygen Devices – also known as PODs, these portable oxygen devices are available in all suites for an à la cart charge of $40. The POD delivers a rich source of clean, fresh oxygen and provides a natural source of balance and rejuvenation – perfect for reviving oneself after running around the city all day. Sleek at 7″ tall and 1.75″ in diameter, the oxygen bottle can be used with one hand and can easily fit into a purse, backpack and jacket pocket. It weighs only 2.5 ounces when full and lasts a full 40 breaths of pure clean oxygen.

• Gourmet Popcorn Turndown Service – Revere Hotel has forgone the traditional turndown amenity of mints or chocolate in lieu of gourmet popcorn created by Executive Chef Bader Ali. Flavors have ranged from Curry to Snickerdoodle to Red Wine Burgundy and have allowed the brand the opportunity to offer a healthier and more unique amenity that is also a homage to its location in the heart of Boston’s theatre district.

• Bully Boy Vodka – Bottled exclusively in 750 ml bottles for Revere as an in-room spirit. Bully Boy Distillers is a Boston’s first craft distillery specializing in small batch spirits located about a mile from Revere Hotel is Boston’s historic south end. Each bottle is labeled and numbered by hand making it the perfect take-home souvenir.

• Skoah Bath Amenities – Revere offers nine different Skoah bath amenities in every guest room, including invigor-mint shampu/conditioner, smooth talk body wash and a pH balancing gel cleanser. All of Skoah’s products are loaded with high performance plant extracts and peptides, vitamins, minerals, organic compounds, and actives to ensure they generate the results they are supposed to. Guests who fall in love with a particular scent can purchase the product in the lobby to take home.

• “Fitness Fluff & Fold” Program – Ideal for guests who stay at the hotel often and may not wish to constantly carry their workout gear back and forth, this complimentary program allows guests to leave their gym clothes/sneakers with the hotel, which will be washed, dried and folded upon their next return.

• Pillow Menu – To help ensure that guests obtain the most peaceful slumber possible, the hotel offers a carefully curated pillow menu. With just one quick phone call, guests will be able to select the one that is right for them, whether it be a side sleeper, back sleeper, anti-snore or hypoallergenic pillow.

• Kindles – Paying tribute to Boston’s incredibly important, deep-seated past, Revere offers its guests the option to rent out Kindles pre-loaded with books that help tell the story of the city’s rich history. Kindles can be obtained for a $100 deposit and used throughout the stay.
